Arrrghhh! Problem was a broken Makefile with the shipping RH7.1!

Solution (courtesy of Kieth Owens):

 mv .config ..
 make mrproper   # Make clean not enough!
 mv ../.config .
 make oldconfig
 make dep clean bzImage
 make modules

FRH! [1]
