I am doing it from one linux box to another so i have the data but the old system wont come up.  if i install 6.5 on another linux box and copy the the pg data base files to the new 6.5 system then run the backup, will that work?

If you have already installed the new 7.x stuff then you have problems.

If you are using prepackaged binaries (.rpms,.debs) then they "probably" backed
up your old 6.X binaries.  IN that case you can run the old postmaster then old
pg_dump etc etc to do the backup THEN run the new postmaster/psql to do the
restore.

If you are running your own binaries and didn't make the backup like the docs
say then basically your stuffed.  You may be able to get it back but that'd
be a question for the postgres developers :(
