Yes it quite possibly has been fixed in the latest kernel... but for me
it was a matter of it being too late... Reiserfs didn't work when I
needed it to and XFS was the first to come along and do what I needed...
I have got XFS installed and running happily so don't see a need to
switch back to reiserfs (along with the necessary filesystem backup
and transfer pain)

I don't know that there are many other advantages or disadvangtages...
as far as I am concerned they are both Journalling filesystems... XFS
uses the same on-disk layout that SGI use with the IRIX XFS so you could
potentially read an IRIX disk plugged into your Linux box or vice
versa... But I don't see that as being a particularly common thing and
so not much of an advantage... I suppose it does show some maturity in
the format they have chosen... and the fact that different versions of
XFS for Linux are unlikely to change the on-disk format...

For those looking at a journalling filesystem for the first time it
might be better to go with reiserfs assuming the problems are fixed as
it is in the standard kernel source...

In any case I recommend going for a journalling filesystem of some
sort... saves a lot of time with the 40Gb+ disks that are common these
days... :)

Cheers

Kim

PS for those playing with migrating their root filesystems or just
wanting a backup plan I thought this was a good idea:

http://innominate.org/~graichen/projects/miniroot/0.6/

Small root system in a .gz to stick in your /boot and add to your
bootloader in case your real root gets stuffed or you need to be able to
unmount it for some reason...
