[plug] Booting on a different device?

Hi list,

We (a client) have a machine running SCO Openserver 5,
which needs regular backups. We've been planning to
use a removeable IDE hard disk in a caddy to back up
onto. (Yes, we know it's not supported. We want to do
it anyway... :)

The main hard disk which SCO runs off is a SCSI disk.
Unfortunately the BIOS is one of the old school which
only allows booting from A or C (no SCSI). What this
means is that if the IDE drive is in at boot time, it
will try to boot off it, but if it's not then the
system can't see it to try to back up onto.

In short, we've been trying to use LILO to redirect
it, ie. put LILO in MBR of IDE, with a single menu
option booting the SCO with the other= parameter.
Here's the lilo.conf:

boot=/dev/hdc
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
linear
other=/dev/sda4
   label=sco
   table=/dev/sda

It writes LILO properly when run with lilo -r /mnt
(with /dev/hdc1 which is an ext2 partition mounted on
/mnt), but when we try to boot off it, it comes up
with

LILO Loading sco

which is normal, but then it just sits there. SCO
normally takes about 10 seconds to pick up without
LILO, but I've left it for at least 40 seconds with no
sign of life.

Any ideas? Can this "redirection" even be done or do I
need something else, such as grub?

TIA
Andrew
