You could try to install/compile vncserver at the remote end and access it
via a vncclient locally - vnc traffic tends to be a lot smaller than the
equivalent X traffic would be.

Failing that, you could try using lbx (low bandwidth X) which was designed
for that purpose - compile & run the lbxproxy program at the remote end,
and have that connect to your local X server (most recent Linux X servers
support lbx)
