Can't help you much with the main one, sorry.

Question one: Are you using RH6 supplied package(s) or building from
source?

Question two: Can you clarify the error report "it utterly refuses to" :)?
What sort of tests have you done? Have you made the necessary php-related
changes to the apache configuration file and restarted apache?

Question three: Does apache by itself seem to be okay? ie. looking at
http://yourhost/ displays the "hooray, you have successfully configured
Apache!" web page?

If you're not building from source, I'd strongly recommend you try. Even if
the idea of building from source scares you[0]. Once you try it and realise
it's not anywhere near as bad as you thought, it gives you a lot more
confidence to know you can do it.

Pete.

[0] Apologies if you have no problems building from source - no offense
meant. I've just noticed a few posts recently on plug from people who
expressed the view that for them, building from source is not an option.
From your words above, I wasn't sure if you fell into that category.
