The card does work with windows and this is my second installation of linux
with the same card. IT was working fine on my previous install. I am
thinking that there is a problem with the IRQ....still not sure tho

The FA310X uses the tulip module in the kernel, check that you have this.
If this is in there check that the card works in windows and what not. If
it works in windows I suggest you try a new kernel like 2.4.2 as we had
this same preoblem at work on Thursday and the card is now working.
