Sounds good. Where do you run the linuxconf manually from the terminal?

The stuff in /etc/rc.d/init.d is ussually used to bring
the system up when it is booted, or when you change the runlevel.

BTW, I don't like the SysV model (the one your computer uses) because it
is too complicated and attempts to abstract routines that don't really
need it.
