[plug] apropos under Mandrake

I installed a Mandrake 7.2 and find there's a problem with
whatis/apropos.  makewhatis takes a poofteenth of a second to run (on a
Celeron that's a worry) and appears to make very small database, because
apropos knows practically nothing about anything.

A quick search around the man pages & errata on Mandrake don't show an
obvious problem, but I guess it's because a man path isn't included
somewhere.

Anyone up to speed on this problem?
