Not so odd! The script ran with the '-w' option.

 Use the source Luke. 'makewhatis' is a script, so its easy to peek:

    -*) echo "Usage: makewhatis [-u] [-v] [-w] [manpath] [-c [catpath]]"
    echo "       This will build the whatis database for the man pages"
    echo "       found in manpath and the cat pages found in catpath."

... from the usage message.
