On a Mandrake 7.1/7.2 - select failsafe from the menu.  Once it boots it
comes to a another small menu from which you can select maintenance
which is equivalent to single.  However it asks for the root password at
this point so you are out of luck!!

Alternative is to keep a boot disk with lilo on it so you can override
the boot settings, or get someone to prepare it for you.
