About the lost root password,
What I would do is boot a rescue system from floppies and mount the
/ partition. Edit the passwd file to set root password to none and
reboot the system.
For the rescue floppies, you can use the SuSE disks (2 disks).
ftp://ftp1.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/suse/suse/i386/7.1/disks/bootdisk
bootdisk image
ftp://ftp1.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/suse/suse/i386/7.1/disks/rescue
recue image
ftp://ftp1.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/suse/suse/i386/7.1/dosutils/rawrite/rawrite.exe
rawrite
Use the rawrite.exe program to write the disks images to real disks.
Boot the bootdisk disk, go through the menus and choose Rescue and then
Floppy. Put the rescue disk and wait for the system to load. After
loaded, use mount to mount your / partiton in /mnt and vi to edit the
/mnt/etc/passwd file. Erase the password field on the root line, which
is the second field with about 13 strange characters between colons.
Then, reboot.
I hope it works for you,
