Dear PLUG members,

Many thanks for the various opinions.  I now have both Perl and PHP so I 
can trial them.  Maybe get Python at a later date and see how that goes, 
too.  I don't mind taking on new languages but have to be mindful of the 
end users.   The abstraction layer thoughts are especially valuable and, 
even at the risk of a performance hit, I think I'd be wise to go that route 
with either approach.
