ld.so-1.9.11-4mdk.i386.rpm
installed its own version of ldconfig

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 220840 Dec 15 2000 ldconfig.new
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 402696 Apr 7 2001 ldconfig.old
quite different to the one that came with RH7.1 -- but is seems to
work - so far

Apparently it is -- nothing broke so far

the old binary now works!!! yeah!!

RPMs are a nightmare -- I never know whether they are appropriate
for the system I am using, I can never install them locally so that
I can keep them when I upgrade. If they write over files, I have to
rename all of the files they will write over in case I want to remove
the RPM and return the system to its original state.
