I don't know about windows media, but XMMS can play streaming MP3s no prob. I
have a friend that does an Internet broadcast on Saturdays and often listen
in.

As for video, don't know. I use mplayer as a video player and from the man page
it seems to support streaming:

	EXAMPLES
		...
	
	       Stream from HTTP
	              mplayer http://mplayer.hq/example.avi
		...

I've never tried it, and I'm guessing you need a phat connection ;)
