I use Xine - it's an excellent media player.  It doesn't do streaming though. 
 It supports Xv if you've got XFree86 v4 and the right graphics card.  It 
works well with ALSA sound but last time I tried to run it with OSS it was 
out of sync - I think that's because the OSS support for my sound card is not 
very good.  It plays CSS DVDs when used with the DVDNAV plugin.

The best thing about Xine is that instead of watching your DVDs in crappy ol' 
high resolution graphics, you can watch them in Ascii-Art.
