Paul,

Can you ping your own machine on that interface? Are there any
ipchains/netfilter firewall rules that might be blocking it? 

Does the network card actually have an IP assigned? I've found that
an interface can be listed as up but not have an address, but never
really saw the sense in it.

Last thing I can think of is are your routing tables complete? I've
only ever occasionally had to modify these manually, but it's worth
a check.
