Thanks to James and Adrian .. both had pointers in the right direction.

Summary .. I started out right .. using "the debian way" ..

1. Removed old card, bung in new PCI card, reboot and be root
2. mv /etc/modultils/ne /etc/modutils/ne~ (moved aside the old network
driver file)
3. update-modules (adjusts /etc/modules.conf politely)
The 2.4.8 kernel has the natsemi driver I needed for an FA311 NIC and
I had a 2.4.8-ac9 image already built with Tony BT's help .. thanks .. and so
4. adjusted my default boot in lilo.conf to be the 2.4.8-ac9
5. ran lilo ! i've forgotten THAT before :)
6. reboot
.. no network .. newbies dilemma =:o .. seeks help ..
7. modprobe natsemi (finds card but ping says "network unreachable")
thinks and reads replies (repeat) .. then ..
8. create file /etc/modutils/natsemi containing "alias eth0 natsemi"
9. update-modules (be polite)
10. stickybeak in /etc/modules.conf to see "alias eth0 natsemi" line .. bewdy
11. reboot (because i'm still not across doing all this live .. reverts to
the "doze way")
12. ping pings all and sundry boxes round the room :)

All proof that hindsight is 20:20
Upshot is I've got a new network card and a new kernel :) glee glee
(Writes nonsense email as possible help for other newbies)
Now for that shiny new 40GB hard disk ..

Thanks again
Harry
