Freaky, this has been happening to me lately and happened just five
minutes ago.  From what I can tell X just kills the keyboard driver
since the machine is still alive and I can log in remotely and kill the
X server process, however, the screen and keyboard do not reset
themselves.  Mine is a Debian system and it has happened under several
different kernels (2.2 and 2.4) using XFree86 server 4.0.2.  Which
version X server are you using?
