I was using vgetty for incoming fax/data/voice with a USR Sportster modem.
I had a couple of problems to work around, but they were due to modem
bugs. It worked well as an answerphone. I still have some of the more
amusing messages on disk.
  It also does DTMF recognition, so you could program your own voice-maze
system. "If you are making a sales cold-call, please press star, or just
hang up."
