Are you running a recent version of XFree?  Some earlier version of the
4.x series did not cache font metrics, which meant that loading KDE with
font antialiasing turned on was terribly slow.

You might like to try switching font antialiasing off and seeing if that
helps at all.


If not, realise that KDE and Gnome are bloated and just switch to
something else like WindowMaker.  You can always run the gnome panel
with it (and possibly even kpanel).  KDE might look nice and sugary, but
it's all as slow as treacle.
