Laptops will usually have a keyboard sequence that switches from the LCD 
to external monitor while it's running. On Acers it's Fn+F5, not sure 
with any others. Just make sure your screen is in a reasonable 
resolution and then use the keyboard shorcut once you've booted up etc.

Or get your laptop ready before you start your presentation :)
