I'll look into the Ontrack solution.  Sounds pretty similar to the IBM
utilities but you never know, they may have some added bells and
whistles.

There is some data on the 'net from Fujitsu describing the
nitty gritty of programming their drives, including reading the SMART
status block(?) and also a call to *write* same.  They don't actually say
so in as many words but I wouldn't mind betting that the log or block or
whatever can be cleared using that method.

Next stop, a dual-boot Windows/Linux laptop :-)  Will use the MS beast in
the lower 1 gig of the drive to allow for the hibernation file and also
for the sheer experience of setting up a d-b configuration.  Off to read
up the HOWTOs, other doco, etc.
