Finally, a question I may have an answer for.
After doing a --dist-update on my Woody machine, using an NVIDIA card, X just
disappeared with no fiddling or anything.
After a couple of days fiddling and using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 I
found the problem.
My machine stopped being compatible with the frame buffer, which happens to
be on by default.
When I did a reconfigure and chose no for the frame buffer, X suddenly
reappeared.
Seemed a bit of a haphazard sort of thing, usually it works sometimes it
doesn't. Check it out.
Something to try anyway.

Mike.
