It's probably unpacking something into temporary space in a dir on the
/ partition, perhaps /tmp or /usr/tmp, and then ending up with too
little space when it tries to finish off.

If /var is on the / partition, try deleting some old logs you don't
need from under /var/log and see whether that buys you enough space.
