Has anyone got the Cisco VPN Client working in Linux?

I'm trying 3.6.2a on several Debian boxes.  It installs, builds and
loads the kernel modules perfectly, and then says it Failed to contact
the security gateway.  

In this case it is connecting to a Cisco 1605 router.  I have tried the
client on Linux machines behind my Debian gateway and have even tried
the client ON the gateway.

I know it should work because the Windows client (via vmware) can
connect from behind the gateway with no troubles.
