Of course, you could always write a quick program that will run in the
root window, and then reparent the main window of the program into it.

(does that make any sense?)

You might also be able to "fake" the effect you're looking for by
telling your window manager to ignore the program and just make it open
to cover the full screen.  It really depends on what you're trying to
break  :)
