[plug] usb 2.0 external cd/hdd bootable for Linux? Any one tried?

Hello Plug, I have been looking at some of the usb 2.0 peripherals like 
cdrw and external hdd.  I read that the devices are bootable from an up to 
date bios.  It seems that usb 2.0 supports linux kernel 2.4.  It all seems 
logical that it should work perfectly - but I wonder if anybody has tried it?
