I've run into this with Compaq desktops, solution used was to hackwas a short 
(LAN, in this case) card with full-height backplate, then fold and dripp the 
truncated backplate to fit. Take excessive care to file off swarf and smooth 
it down, then wipe again to avoid filings, before reattaching the card and 
installing it.

Yes, it not only voids your warranty, it probably at least void *'s it.
