Good evening all,
I recently installed Debian Potato 2.2r2 off a set of cd's, this all went
well.
I then did an
apt-get update; apt-get upgrade
to bring the machine up to date. (xwindows worked here..)
I decided to upgrade to a 2.4 kernel, ran into some dramas and found that I
needed to upgrade modutils, so I modified aptsources to allow for unstable
and did
apt-get update; apt-get install modutils
2.4 kernel worked fine, Xwindows still worked..
I decided to install xcdroast as I was wanting to do some burning and so
(good ol' apt)
apt-get install xcdroast
displays me a list of files it wants to fetch I give it approval and off it
goes.
on completion of the update and installation I found that startx had
vanished !! After some thoughts I decided to do a complete upgrade in the
hope that this would fix the problem but alas it did not. Some further
digging and I found the xclient-base (?) package which had startx and other
bits in it and so I re-installed this package using apt.
I now have a startx, but when I try to run it X fails with
X: "cannot stat /etc/X11/X (no such file or directory), aborting.
giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3): Server error.
There is no /etc/X11/X, but I am not sure what this should be. I have tried
pointing this back at /usr/X11R6/bin/X but it doesn't like that
(X: /etc/X11/X points back to X wrapper executable, aborting)
I'm just about to re-install because I'm stuck (damn windows mentality...)
any help would be greatly appreciated..
