Make sure your twisted pairs go...

    1+2
    3+6
    4+5
    7+8

...and match at each end. For long runs this is important.

I had similar things happen here even with the right pairing, and found that 
the crappier hubs just won't drive that much copper (cabling included a 20m 
run and a 25m run, oddly it was the 20m run which flaked out, pings would get 
from box to hub but not back), but a crappy-ish switch (KingMax KS-3205 in 
this case) will.
