Of course, you should have regular backups of everything in /etc anyway.
But yes, one of those is the relevant file, depending on which X server
you use.

But you dont need to change anything, just plug in your new monitor,
Assuming its new, it should accept all your old modes.

If you want to add new modes, to get less flicker, or more pixels,
I suggest editing the XF86Config file by hand. It may not be quicker, but
you will learn something. Its well documented.
