I've had a fair bit of success in the past with extracting files from 
"self-extracting" windows .exe archives using two programs: cabextract, 
and unzip. Both seem to understand the "exe-wrapped" formats and decode 
them as if they're normal archives. Of course, this only helps you with 
a subset of the programs.
