This rescue system (Recovery is Possible) could help:

You'll need the CD version for the xfs support, as far as I can tell -
a 4MB ISO download. I've only used the floppy version but it's got a
bunch of useful tools and an up-to-date kernel.

If you can statically compile xfs_repair ("gcc -static"), you could use
any other rescue system and run that off floppy.

The safest thing would be to get a machine with 40GB free space and
make a copy to a file first ("dd if=/dev/hdc2 of=/tmp/huge.img"), then
work on the copy...
