Hello again Plug,
I've finally got the XFS problem fixed. Thanks to everyone who helped, especially Harry and Bernard.
The rescue disc that I ended up using was the Gentoo install CD. It has a 20mb ramdisc with everything I needed, including a copy of xfs_repair.
xfs_repair announced that my log was broken and would have to be zeroed and that I'd lose metadata and such. This is the kind of problem that a modern FS such as XFS should prevent, but nevertheless everything seems to be working again.
Brinley: The problem was that the filesystem refused to mount, so moving the disc to another machine and mounting it there wouldn't help.
Harry: Thanks for your suggestions of using rescue discs and xfsprogs. I didn't end up using the Woody CD as you suggested.
Bernard and Nick: xfs_repair did trick. Sadly I don't have another machine with a >40GB hard disc, let alone 40GB of free space, so I let xfs_repair do whatever it wanted to in the hope that not too much would suffer.
CP.
