I quite like the Kodak range. They're cheapo range, but some have optical zoom
(and even 2x zoom is great for tightening up a shot).
No, I don't own one myself (yet), but I've used my cousin's DX3600 extensively
(used it like crazy as our new house was built), which at 2.2 Megapixel does
decent shots. They even seem to've dropped in price by $100-$200 since he got
his.

They're CompactFlash I believe, but come with a USB cable, and talk some new
standard protocol (PTP). I think it was jphoto I tried which worked, but I
predominantly used Windoze to transfer pics on & off, as the Linux software
was still a little immature feature-wise at the time.
