Yep cool project.

I had a go once but did not succeed. I used the mgetty debian packages.
Had to add the following line to /etc/inittab file:

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1

Somehow I did stop experimenting because I only had a pre-paid mobile to
call the home number which made the testing too expensive.

The modem actually did pickup the phone when it rang but did not hang up
or it was not a fax or anything. I did stopped the project by then.

Maybe you could write down the steps you take while setting it up and
post them here.
