[plug] Why pump ?

When I wander into UCC and connect the standard response is "pump is your
friend".

What advantage does it have over dhcp-client ?

I'll try to answer myself .. I _thought_ pump allowed you to leave
/etc/network/interfaces intact and let pump take over setup using the UCC DHCP
server. That way, when you wander home, the machine comes up honky dory on the
home network. Does it do this and dhcp-client doesn't ?

I have a debian box (or many) but this is a RedHat utility so I guess it works
the same way there.

The question relates to whether we need to install pump on the CA machines for
rapid (temporary) changeover from the take home ppp setup. We want to be able
to quickly use the ethernet interface for apt-get and to setup machines for
in-office training.

Other ideas welcome but I'd _really_ like to know why "pump is my friend" :-)

Harry
