This is called the non-solution-solution
Go and get a program called eznet you should be able to locate it at
http://rpmfind.net
Install and configure that (it's really easy), then you will be able to
bring your interface up with eznet up/eznet down.
If you _really_ have to, you could then modify the ifup/ifdown scripts
to call that program when passed the value ppp0.
You'll save yourself a lot of trouble.
