Off the top of my head, a possibility is that the user's uid is already used 
by another user in RH 7.2 (one of the predefined users) and therefore they 
dont have access to that user's files (if you know what I mean)

Since youve recreated the user, try doing a 'chown -R userid:groupid 
/home/userid' and see if that helps
