Of course network security is a compromose but this isn't an excuse to
resorting to witchcraft. You're kidding yourself if you think that a virus
checker is an important part of your security policy.
There are many methods you can employ which improve the security of your
system without having an adverse effect on the usability. The most important
thing about security is sandboxing.
If you are speaking of the Windoze platform then you're pretty much correct.
Even vague security is impossible. You may as well do what I do with my car -
leave the doors unlocked and make sure you don't leave anything valueable in
it.
Counting this morning I have had my car broken into three times in the six
months I've lived in Perth. Fortunately this morning they just got into the
car (without damaging the door this time because I no longer lock it),
searched around, found that there was nothing they wanted.
