Maybe a really dumb question.. but why not spend $30 and get a nice common
Nic that will be recognised?

The kernel was provided by SAP, as an RPM. This is my SAP box. This does
restrict my ability to re-compile somewhat, or to upgrade the kernel.
That's why I'm upgrading to RH 7.1, SAP 6.1 (from 4.6b). I'm hoping that
the network drivers in the SAP kernel for RH7.1 are modules, like for 6.1
The problem is that I can't install RH 7.1 because I get a kernel panic very
early on in the install, I'm clutching at straws somewhat, hoping that the
00.00... HW address caused the panic. Or that the lack of driver in the
standard RH boot image caused it. It's a bummer, whatever it is.
