All comments have been good and positive and yes, Sol, I've been meaning to
get going on this for some time now.

Proposal:
Meeting regarding this topic soon (later this week?) to develop the
brian-storm and to identify further steps?

Rationale :
While PLUG is (and should remain) a user support forum, this particular
issue is very important and should at least be moved to a SIG or
(preferably) an action group.

Anticipated attendees:
Anyone commercially supporting Linux should be interested and knowing the
breadth and depth of skills available[1] will aid the project development
significantly.
Anyone with communicable philosophical/political arguments would be
appreciated
Anyone adept at legal interpretation would be appreciated (Jeremy!)

Short, inconclusive list of steps would include:
  - Technical overview
  - FS/OSS alternatives assessment
  - Political considerations
  - Geographical considerations
  - Training requirements (operations)
  - Training requirements (support)
  - Manpower distribution and options (Commercial, voluntary, school-based?)
  - Organisationsal structure and philosophy if we choose to proceed.

I personally have helped several schools and I know of others that have
also. While that experience has been positive, I'm convinced that only a
holistic approach will have any real benefit in the mid- and long-term.

Ironically, real improvements in LT ("Learning Techonolgies" for those not
associated with teachers or the e-Chalk list) can only be achieved with LT..
and that input will have to come from external to the Education System and
in a way that the system will understand.

If you are interested, please email me offlist (brian at paradigmit.com.au)
letting me know who you are and if you have any suggestions on when and
where such a meeting may be held. I would prefer during business hours, but
depending on number and type of responses, I'll let you know the detail when
available.

Regards,
Brian Tombleson.
