In your /etc/X11/XF86config check that the Section "Inputdevice" has
option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" for Intellimouse and PS/2 for PS/2 as 4.2 for
some unknown reason has INTELLIMOUSE or something for protocol.

No this is correct as long as you have PS/2 connection and mouse using
it; mouse is not USB?

You have tried to invoke a keyboard layout or language, just go for
defaults until you get XFree86 sorted.
