[plug] perl gurus

Probably a simple question although I am at a loss to find the answer.

When I edit / create a perl file I seem to get the following errors:

m1.pl" 8L, 136C
Error detected while processing /usr/share/vim/vim61/ftplugin/perl.vim:
line   37:
E91: 'shell' option is empty
Can't open file /tmp/v769577/0
line   51:
E121: Undefined variable: perlpath
E15: Invalid expression: perlpath

I am then dropped into file for editing but without any highlighting or 
anything else :(

I also don't seem to get the highlighting for say C files either but no error 
is thrown up.

btw. this is in an xterm under kde. Strangely enough at the console all works 
fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :) If further info is required please 
just ask
