In most default installs, a "cat /etc/issue" will give you the
banner string given at the console. Tells you which release aswell
for most of the distros i've tinkered with - RH, Debian, Mandrake
and maybe more. But this can be customised after the install, so it
may say something completely different.

eg:
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/\s 3.0 \n \l
