I agree completely with Craig on the leave debian perl as it is and install yours in /usr/local. But I wouldn't interfere with the normal debain perl at all. Set your PATH right to look for the local copy first and you don't need to worry about the distribution perl. There's no reason to stop dist perl from being upgraded with the rest of the system, and its probably a good idea if there are bugfixes.
