I remember trying to trouble shoot a small LAN once.  Finding the offending 
computer ended up being a shocking experience... literally!).  For what ever 
reason the case had quite a high voltage on it.  Might not be what's 
happening in your case but you may want to check that both units are properly 
grounded (earthed?).

In my case once I diconnected the offending computer the rest of the network 
was fine and back up to full speed.
