Well, first the latest of whatever distro he picks. If it won't work, 
either download the latest kernel from the distributor or roll-your-own 
2.4.20-pre (or 2.4.19, whatever). See if that fixes it. If not, see if 
you can get any ID string out of the USB subsystem (usually look in 
syslog after unplug and plug) and post it to the list - maybe someone 
can help.
