Despite being the usual advice, it didn't apply to earlier kernels[1].
However, it was recommended for early 2.4 kernels due to the swap
model they used[2]. I _think_ (but I'm open to correction) that more
recent 2.4 kernels have changed to a model which again makes it less
necessary.
